Goin' to the dump
Everyone hates "info dumping". You can't go a day on the Reddit writers' forums without someone complaining about it. But why? What's so wrong with giving your readers some context, some backstory? Who dislikes being informed?
Well, the trouble isn’t the info, it’s the DUMP.
If you can find a way to pack a lot of information into a small space, entertainingly enough so people actually enjoy reading it, you have succeeded in your quest, and no more will be said about it.
“Info dumping”, on the other hand, is when this process goes wrong and it annoys the reader.
Even if the trip is short, a dump always stinks.
